CHET BAKER(チェット・ベイカー)

 Chesney H. Baker 1929年12月23日オクラホマ州のイエールに生まれ、少年時代をカルフォルニアで過ごした。
 13歳の時ジャック・ティーガーデンのファンであった父親からトロンボーンを買い与えられたが高校時代トランペットに変更し、 
 音楽の基礎を固めダンス・バンドやブラス・バンドで活躍した。

 46年軍隊にとられミリタリー・バンドに所属、このとき初めてVディスクでモダンジャズを聴く。
 48年に除隊後ロサンゼルスのエル・カミノ・カレッジで楽理と和声を勉強した。

 50年再び兵役につきアーミー・バンドに入りサンフランシスコに駐屯した。
 その間同地の『バップ・シティ』に出入りして、トランペットを吹いた。除隊後の52年チャーリー・パーカーのオーディションで選ばれ共演。
 その後ジェリー・マリガン・カルテットの一員になり脚光を浴びた。53年マリガンがドラッグで90日間拘留された影響でグループは解散。

 53年に自己のコンポを結成して独立。
 たちまち西海岸ジャズの人気スターとなり、以後、欧州各地でも活躍、しかし、この間、欧州で麻薬渦により投獄され悲運の時期を送った。

 64年イタリアから帰国した彼はハード・バップ風なコンポを結成して活躍を続けていたが、60年代後期から70年代初期にかけては楽界から離れた。
 しかし、73年夏ニューヨークで復帰した。

 人生の大半をホテルと刑務所で過ごし麻薬から逃れることなく88年5月13日アムステルダムでホテルの2階から転落死。
 麻薬を買うために多くの録音をヨーロッパに残す。

 チェットの死後、封切られた『レッツ・ゲット・ロスト』は第62回アカデミー賞ドキュメンタリー部門にノミネート。
